CEEL program in Adaptive Economic Dynamics
Seventh Trento Summer School Intensive course in
Co-Directors: Leigh Tesfatsion, Iowa State University Robert Axtell, The Brookings Institution
Guest lecturers include Professor John Duffy, University of Pittsburgh, Professor Dan Friedman, University of California, Santa Cruz, Professor Mauro Gallegati, University of Ancona, Professor Herbert Gintis, Central European University and Santa Fe Institute, Peter Howitt, Brown University, Axel Leijonhufvud of UCLA and the University of Trento. A market economy is a complex adaptive system. Vast numbers of agents cooperate and compete within it. Their interactions give rise to regularities at the level of society as a whole, including laws and commonly accepted rules of behavior. In turn, these social regularities feed back into the determination of agent behaviors. Patterns of behavior and social regularities co-evolve. Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE) draws on recent developments in computer modeling to study economic processes as dynamic systems of interacting agents. The Seventh Summer School in the Trento Program in Adaptive Economic Dynamics is designed to teach students to use agent-based computational laboratories to conduct ACE experiments and to develop such experiments on their own. Prior programming experience is helpful but not required. Prior Trento Summer Schools have been of two weeks duration. The Seventh Summer School will run for three weeks in order to give students sufficient hands-on experience to be able to teach ACE to their students. The Trento Summer Schools are intended for advanced graduate students and post-doctoral scholars and they are as always encouraged to apply. This year, however, preference will be given to teachers interested in using agent-based computational modeling tools in the classroom. People interested in participating in the Summer School are encouraged to apply by submitting a curriculum vitae, a two-page essay describing their interest in using agent-based modelling in teaching and/or research, a course transcript from their PhD program, including advanced examinations passed, and two letters of recommendation. Teachers need not submit grades and exams, etc., but letters of recommendation are still desirable. Applications are due by April 5, 2006. We encourage electronic submissions. You can submit all the required documents by e-mail (ccschool@economia.unitn.it) or fax (0039-0461-882222). Admissions decisions will be announced by April 25, 2006. All applicants will be informed by e-mail about the results. The mini-school will be held at Sardagna Trento, Italy, a beautiful retreat, accessed by cable car, in the Dolomite Mountains. All participants are required to stay for the entire duration of the conference. Food and accommodation at the conference will be completely covered (participants will have to cover travel to the conference). Please direct logistical questions to the Summer School Secretary (ccschool@economia.unitn.it). This is the Seventh of a series of intensive courses offered by the Computable and Experimental Economics Laboratory (CEEL). Previous courses were offered in Computable Economics (2000, Professor K. Vela Velupillai), Experimental Economics (2001, Professor Daniel Friedman), Adaptive Economic Processes (2002, Professor Peter Howitt), Behavioral Economics (2003, Professors Daniel Friedman and David Laibson), Institutional Economics (2004, Professor Richard N. Langlois) and Evolutionary Economic Dynamics (2005, Ken Binmore and Larry Samuelson).
